40 Years Ago, Hip Hop was Born at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue!

The Father of Hip Hop: DJ Kool Herc

40 years ago, on August 11, 1973, hip hop was born at
1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx! Here's what happened:
Getting ready for the end of summer and her return to school, Cindy Campbell came up with the idea to have a "Back to School Jam" in the recreation room of their 100 unit apartment building to raise money for the school clothes she wanted. She hand-drew the invitation to the party on an index card and recruited the help of her then 16 year old brother, Clive Campbell, nicknamed Hercules because of his huge build, to provide the entertainment, and their parents for the drinks and snacks. Admission was 25 cents for the ladies and 50 cents for the fellas.

The invitation

Though Clive was already laying down the foundations of hip hop with his building of a new kind of bass-heavy sound system with his father and his development of various deejaying techniques like the "break" and the "merry-go-round", at the party, Clive, aka DJ Kool Herc, introduced a new technique called the "extension". Then during the party, Clive's friend, Coke La Rock, a NY City rapper, started shouting out friends and partygoers over the deejay's music initiating the art of rap and thus becoming the first MC! That night, they made $500, and hip hop, a ground-breaking new genre of music, was born!

The $38,000 Tom Ford Handbag that Sparked an International Incident!

Oprah Winfrey says she wanted to take a closer look at a handbag selling for $38,000, but that the salesperson at Zurich’s Trois Pommes refused to take it off the shelf, telling Winfrey, 'No, it's too expensive.'
Trois Pommes in Zurich, Switzerland
Well, unless you've been completely cut off from all forms of media in the last few days, you have undoubtedly heard about the incident between Oprah and a Zurich boutique clerk that's got everybody buzzing. Reportedly, while in Switzerland to attend her friend, Tina Turner's wedding, Oprah visited the "Trois Pommes" boutique in Zurich, and requested to take a look at a Tom Ford handbag that sells for a whopping $38,000. Alledgedly, the shop clerk refused to take the handbag off the shelf stating that Oprah wouldn't be able to afford it and suggested she look at similar bags that cost less. The clerk involved in the incident has said that it was all a misunderstanding and that even though to her things didn't exactly go down that way, she would apologize to Oprah if she could talk to her again. Okay, that's the back story. Was this a case of "racial profiling"? Possibly, and that's not cool! But, let's face it! When you heard the story, didn't you want to know what that $38,000 Tom Ford Jennifer handbag (named after Jennifer Aniston) looked like? Well, here's the bag that started the whole thang! Check it out!

Don't Pop Mollies! Rock That Tom Ford!

Who's the American fashion designer whose collections are so dope he inspired a Jay-Z song on his recently released new album, Magna Carta Holy Grail? Well, of, course, Tom Ford! Tom Ford, who by the way is also a film director, became internationally known many years ago for his turnaround of the Gucci fashion house. After leaving Gucci, in 2006, Ford developed his own iconic label and launched a line of beauty, eyewear, menswear, and accessories. As they say, "the rest is history". Jay-Z, reportedly, has been rocking Tom Ford for years now and is obviously a number one fan of the brand, but definitely not the only celebrity client! Check out these pics to see who else is rocking Tom Ford plus a few items from Tom Ford spring/summer 2013 and the upcoming 2013 fall season. *Tom Ford brand items are available online and in stores like Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.
